On a road trip from Washington, DC to Niagara Falls, what should I see?

I'm planning a road trip with the family (wife + teenagers) in July to Niagara Falls from our home near Washington, DC. Are there any interesting places to stop in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Western New York? One person suggested Longwood Gardens outside of Philadelphia. Are there any crazy places that have a huge chicken or cow out front?
